Lansing, Mich. – Michigan Health Council (MHC) today announced that the Michigan Loan Reimbursement and Employment Solution (MiLES) will be accepting applications for a second time this year, between July 1 and July 31 of 2019.  During the first application window of 2019, six MD physician residents and two DO physician residents were awarded a combined $400,000 in tax-free loan reimbursement.

“By opening a second application window, we continue building a pipeline of physicians committed to working in specific areas of Michigan,” said Amy Hoge, Director of Physician Services at MHC. “This not only helps those communities plan, it also helps the physician reduce their debt more quickly by applying $50,000 to their student loans while they are still in residency, potentially saving 2+ years of compounding interest in addition to the award dollars.”

The Michigan Loan Reimbursement & Employment Solution (MiLES) offers $50,000 in tax-free loan repayment to physician residents during their residency in exchange for a 2-year post-residency service commitment in a medically underserved area of Michigan.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to help place qualified physician candidates in communities that they can see themselves working in long-term,” said Melanie Brim, President and CEO of MHC. “Physicians are critical to improving access to care and creating healthier Michigan communities.”

Physicians completing residency in 2020 and 2021 in approved specialties are eligible to apply. If physician residents do not have employment arranged, the Michigan Health Council will help connect them with eligible opportunities that fit their needs.
